Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
