No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
